Last Saturday I had the pleasure to record Barbera van der Kaay (2015 contestant of Dutch tv show ‘De Beste Singer/Songwriter’) in my home. I was looking forward not only to talk to her again but also to record her performance the best way I could. She arrived in the morning, we had a chat over a freshly made smoothie before setting up shop.

She asked if she could look out of the window while singing, which I happily accommodated by intently placing the microphones around her as she faced the windows. It may have been the best way to go anyway considering that the occasional tram can make quite some noise as it passes by.

I recorded five signals in total: mics were used to record her voice (from slightly downward position), the guitar’s neck and bottom end, the room, and the guitar was directly plugged in.

We recorded a total of eight songs (taking a halfway break during which we strolled outside for a walk and drink in the sun), which I am to mix and master as well as I can. Stay tuned for the results!
